Three Smiling Children

Haiku My Heart
April 6, 2012

Wander on over the recuerda mi corazón where Rebecca has gathered us for more Haiku MY Heart offerings.

My three daughters, 1978

Joyful smiles of glee
Memories of my children
Swinging, loving life
We moved from Chicago to Minnesota in 1974. Maggie had just turned one at the end of July. Moving day was August 3rd. In four short years, our family grew, we bought a house in St. Paul and put a swing set in the back yard. Left to Right in the photo were Alyssa, just about three, Maggie, the oldest, at five, and Jayne closing in on two years old.

This old photo was shot in black and white and I found it in a folder of black and white shots I had done for a school project as I was taking a photography course at Lakewood Junior College back then.

It has always been a favorite of mine. Those smiles are of a different era, a different time in space completely. A time when I don't remember having health problems or sadness from the loss of our oldest child. That happened years later in 1991. A lot of water flowed under the bridge since then, but I am filled with precious memories of my children as little kids and I am reminded daily when I see my Grandchildren and their smiling faces. It does my heart good to stand by and remember.

Peace

I love black and white. It ages so much better than colour.

Your haiku and the picture fills me with nostalgia. 1978 was so long ago. I met my husband June 9.

Smiles of children can light up the day, even smiles on old photographs can take you back to happy times in one flash... right now my smile is bittersweet - it was as if I saw myself as a kid on the photo in the middle - and it appears to be your oldest daughter Maggie. I can't help but wonder: would we have looked as much the same in these days, if she'd not died?

It never ceases to amaze me how a photo can capture a tiny window into so many feelings and memories... This window is so sweet and bittersweet at the same time. I am so glad that you have this joyful trio swinging always in your heart...

Sweet, sweet memories...

Did you know that I am one of three girls ? The Oldest, in fact. My Dad had photos of us three very much like this. I lost him when I was 30. He was 53. He had beautiful Hawk energy. He taught me a lot about love, loss and seeing with my Soul eyes.
Just some things that struck me when I saw this picture. Links in our stories, I guess.
I hope you enjoy your alone time this weekend. Peace, light and love to you, Man, my friend.

You are indeed 'rich in daughters.' They are lovely and I love the 'oldness' of the photo. I always loved swings when I was a kid.

Life's simple pleasures! Kids really know how to live in the moment.

That photo could be titled "Happiness".
The sound track could be one of the happiest tunes I know ...

I love old photographs like this one. We were all innocent back then, even after all the wars, we didn't know terrorism. It's good to revisit these memories and reflect, or just be in the moment. Priceless.
