Shadow Shot Sunday
November 21, 2010

Shadow Shot Sunday is a creation from down under, Brisbane, Queensland it says on the profile page. To see more Shadow Shots or to find out how you can participate, go to the Hey Harriet blog.
My Shadow Shots today are from a recent trip I took down the Southeast of the USA. We drove. I have much more time than money, so the forty plus miles per gallon option was a more thrifty alternative to flying. Besides, have you been keeping up with all that flap about the Xray scanners?
A good blogger friend of mine, Mel over at Mel’s Dream, runs around the countryside of rural Iowa, USA in her Jeep and snaps photos of all sorts of things. Beautiful sunrises and sunsets, natural occurrences of flora and fauna, trains and as I’ve taken notice of lately, quilt barns. In fact, she posted a photo today of a beautiful quilt barn.
While on my journey, I mentioned Mel and her blog in casual conversation when we saw a quilt barn. Then, every so often, Mrs. Spadoman would say to me, “There’s another quilt barn”, and point in the direction of said structure. I stopped once and took a couple of photos. Then, I stopped again and actually got out of the car and walked a huge field to take a few pictures of another rather interesting quilt barn.
The first is a small store/apartment in a trendy art gallery area of the town of Corbin, Kentucky. The second is in the countryside in deep Southeastern Tennessee, not far from the Smoky Mountains. Both of these places as well as everywhere we went were casting shadows as the sun is angled so deeply in the sky this time of year.

We saw many more quilt barns, but I didn’t stop and take photos of all of them. The subject did give us something to talk about besides where we were going to be eating our next meal while nibbling on the giant sourdough pretzels and Honeycrisp apples, snacking as we drove.
I love the contrast of the almost new looking perfect quilt on the peak of the old weathered barn.

The shadowy mountainous landscape beyond the barn are the Smoky Mountains, part of the Appalacians.
Have a wonderful day and live in Peace.

I've lived in the hills of eastern Kentucky, Spadoman, so your photos make me nostalgic for my home of long ago.

Wonderful photos and an interesting topic. Your munch-a-lunch sounds great, too.
Thanks for introducing us to something that's new to some of us.

Hey, Spadoman! I have been so busy with school, I haven't been by in so long. Love the look of the blog.

My grandmother's always made quilts, a fine art that I should have learned. Where are all those quilts now? I don't know. Lost with the wood cook stove, and the little black irons you heated on the stove to iron with. So many things, full of history, but lost now forever. Thanks for reminding me of the wonderful heritage I have.

Hey friend, been crazy busy around here these days, haven't been blogging to much, too many dogs to gussy up for the holidays.

We have many barn quilts in our neck o the woods, love them on the old weathered woods...but then it doesn't take much for me, I see so much beauty in all my surroundings.

Have a wonderful Sunday and stay warm, us old folk get cold easy these days. One thing about starting to age(and show it), everyone holds the door for me now...is that a good thing or not...ha!

Love your haiku...well said!

Namaste old(young) friend...

I love these shots, especially the quilt on the run down barn. It's interesting how something that is all around can go unnoticed for so long, and then you see it everywhere!

Is this a Midwest thing, these quilt barns? I don't know anything about them. Does it mean that a quilter lives there? Does it mean that people gather there to quilt? Is it a secret code for something? Now I wonder if we have any of these here in NM. I guess you'll let me know since you are headed this way by now?

I like quilts a lot. I usually only see cloth ones around here - at the county fair, at people's houses and when we visit Nova Scotia. Maybe I'm just not looking hard enough but barn quilts are not very common around our corner of New England.

Great post. Loved it. Clicked on Mel's blog and left a comment on that awesome photo of the red barn with the barn quilt on it. Gorgeous.

Peace,
Gina

I've never heard of quilt barns before and now I'm really curious about them? I have the same questions as Molokai Girl! I'll try google for some further info. Fascinating! We have nothing quite like that here in Australia. Not that I'm aware of anyway :)

40+mpg.....I'd take that option any day.
I soooo love road trips and windshield time. :-)

And I adore the barnquilts--but I'm thinking you coulda guessed that one! :-)

They're popping up in all sorts of places--even though they've been around for a few hundred years, they've been making a comeback more recently as a free standing block attached to the barn versus being painted directly to the barnwood. And gosh-- I just love 'em.
They speak to history and culture and heritage.....

And they're just too cute. :-)
