I woke up in a pretty good mood today. That, in and of itself, is a reason to celebrate. As you know, things have been pretty dismal lately. But today seems like it’s gonna be a good day despite the fourth cloudy overcast dreary rain soaked wet damp shitty early Spring weather day here on the beautiful shores of the Great Lake Superior. The lake itself is still frozen, but it has darkened a lot. A sure sign of open water soon.
We’ve been here at the Cabinette since Friday mid day. We don’t have any broadcast TV hooked up. We do get one channel, but it’s FOX and we don’t watch it. We have some movies that were given to us as gifts. We don’t watch them because we’ve seen them all at least once or twice or more.
Barb rented a couple of movies this weekend. Always the thrifty one that Barb. Did you know she doesn’t buy new clothes? Only underwear. All other stuff comes from Goodwill or St. Vincent DePaul or some other thrift store. Once she bought a dress for a fancy wedding we went to. She wore it with the tag tucked into the armpit and took it back to Macy’s monday morning, really!
She found these on the rack at the movie rental store and they were two for $1.00. That’s right, two movies, all weekend for one dollar. We watched them yesterday from late afternoon into the evening. The first one was an HBO make of Blackbeard. It’s hard to fuck up a movie about pirates. This one was okay in the sense they did lop off Blackbeard’s head in the end and they also had the name right for the British Navy officer that did him in. Robert Maynard.
I know this because I have a complete book about pirates, two of them actually, and a coloring book too. I referenced the book immediately after the movie to see how true to life it was. It was astoundingly true except they had a bimbo aboard the ship. Everyone knows there are no women aboard pirate ships or British Royal Navy Frigates. And I thought this gal pretty ugly as the starlets go. Just my opinion. Could have been done without the broad. Lopping Blackbeard’s head off and mounting on the bowsprit was enough of a climax. I didn’t need to see them embraced on the foredeck, leaning against the foremast like the cover of a Harlequin Romance novel.
The second movie was one called “Last of His Tribe”. It was a horrible movie as far as story and all. Also my opinion. But the end had me crying a little. This Indian comes out of the woods in the early 1900’s. They find him to be the last Yaqui Indian, a race they thought extinct. In that Victorian fashion, a museum curator gets his life story from him while his wife dies from tuberculosis. The curators wife dies, not the Indians wife. The Indian was the last of his tribe. Didn’t you read the title of the movie?
Before the movies, we played Scrabble. Barb went to Wal Mart and bought one. We just couldn’t find ours anywhere. we think the Grandkids played with the little wooden tiles with the letters and lost most of them, so we threw it away or ripped someone of at a garage sale a year or two ago when we might have sold it for fifty cents.
I won the first game. Barb won the next two. We play for sexual favors. I think most married folks who have any kind of board game activity might use this friendly competition to get some. In my case, I was lucky once. Barb considers her refusal to have sex as her choice when she wins. That must have inspired her, although she didn’t win by much.
We have no dictionary. That was probably sold at the same garage sale as the original Scrabble game. We used the spellcheck feature on the word processor part of our computer. Appleworks did the contesting. I didn’t know that you lose a turn if you don’t agree with the spelling and you’re wrong. That’s a crappy rule and cost me.... well, it cost me, damn!
Today, a fine cloudy foggy Sunday morning here in the Northwoods, we’ll have coffee and tea. I drink tea mostly these days. Barb is still on the fast track to caffeine addiction and losing the battle. She is the only person I know that can have a good night cup of high test joe and sleep until 8 freakin’ thirty a.m.
We’ll probably play another game or two of Scrabble. Maybe we’ll start a triathlon tournament. We’ll do Scrabble, Cribbage and 500 Rummy, best of seven for each, winner take all, (or not have to give any).
After games, we’ll head back to St. Paul. We drove one car and came here to the Cabinette. Middle daughter has my car and is going to clean and vacuum it in exchange for using it. We’ll stop there and I’ll retrieve my clean car and we’ll return to Steve’s where we are staying. I’ll visit my friend Darl at the nursing home on Monday and return to the Cabinette on Wednesday. Tuesday I’m cooking vegetarian lasagna for a gathering at Steve's. One of his employees is leaving and he wants to send her off with a small get together in her honor.
Barb will return home on Thursday after work and we’ll have another go at the Scrabble. We’ll play continuously until I win again or until I am frustrated to the point of suicide. I’ll choose suicide because there is no way I will relinquish the words, “You are better than me at Scrabble” to her. And if I happen to win another game and get to claim the prize, well, I’ll be tired out and will go to sleep at 8 p.m.
I also went on the IRS website and looked into this economic stimulus money they are giving away. I files my taxes in a timely manner even though I didn’t have to pay any. This is what you have to do to get the stimulus. They send them out according to your social security number’s last two digits. In our case, we’ll get a paper check in the mail some time after May 23rd. If I had used the direct deposit featuyre, I would have gotten the money on May 3rd. Of course i had no option for direct deposit since I didn’t have tpo pay or get any tax money refunded. Sly ones those IRS folks. We’re going to get $600.00. That’s a lot of stimulus.
What’s that? Okay dear, I’ll be right there. Looks like the coffee and tea respectively are ready and the game board is open on the kitchen table.
Peace to all of you. Thanks for everything.

Win Brother, win! If that isn't enough of a motivator, try staring at your right hand for a while...lol!
d.
we play scrabble, too, but not often ... usually only when we're camping. for some reason, camping & scrabble go together. husband is a pretty competitive player. even though I do crosswords & he doesn't, he still beats me at scrabble. we play "friendly rules" which means you can challenge up to 3 words & be wrong before it starts costing you!
as far as those rental movies go, they couldn't be any worse than enduring a McCain speech. we just started using Red Box, which is any movie, mostly all the newest titles, for $1/night. Saw "No Country for Old Men" (didn't care for it). Next up, "There Will be Blood" (I already don't like the title).
